During Operation Market II, on 19 September 1944, Squadron Leader Gilliard's aircraft, LJ-939, was hit over the DZ by 2 shells which severed his controls. He ordered his crew to bale out while they had time, but Squadron Leader Gilliard and Flying Officer Mc Ewen were still aboard the Stirling when it crashed and were killed.
